Radio became really important to me when I was a touring musician. During the many hours I drove through the night from London to Scotland, radio became my friend. Listening to either the night concerts on BBC R3 or the endless pool of information and shared opinions on BBC R4.

During my childhood radio was the only way of finding out about new music that I hadn’t heard before by just switching on and then recording on my combined cassette and radio recorder what I liked. I listened for many years to my recorded cassette tape of Felix Mendelssohn's Piano concerto no 1, never knowing the the first 10 bars, which were missing from my recording!
